How Modest Gym Wear Boosted My Confidence

Most of my life, I thought the confidence I gain in the gym comes after hitting a certain workout milestone. Like, after looking a certain way, you'd get access to feel good about yourself. I learned this logic is completely wrong. What really changed my confidence above all else was my clothes.

Wearing more modest apparel completely changed my headspace. I stopped caring about what I look like and started caring more about how I feel when I work out. When the focus shifted, I began to enjoy working out rather than stressing about it. I didn't even expect my modest gym clothes for women to change my mindset. So yes, modest workout clothes and self esteem are closely connected.

Struggles With Traditional Gym Wear

Wearing traditional gym clothes is like taking a test you didn't study for. Leggings that feel way too tight, tops that seem too short, fabric that is way too thin. I don't mean to be rude, but I don't need to be dunked on so I can feel the "good kind" of attention.

During my workouts, instead of thinking about the workout, my head is filled with questions like what's wrong with my outfit. Is my top riding up? Are my leggings see-through? Can people see too much? That awareness about my outfit is exhausting. Unmotivating and confidence-destroying. This is a perfect example of how gym clothes affect confidence. When your outfit feels wrong, your workout feels wrong too.

While looking around for modest activewear, I felt a relief, as for once, I didn't have to worry about making compromises for gym clothes. Modest activewear made clothes feel like they were made for me. Instead of layering clothes that would limit my movement or adding oversized hoodies to gym outfits, I found clothes that let me do everything.

Before I found modest activewear, I was always trying to "fix" my gym outfits. I would wear shirts that are longer than the tops, lower my shorts, or work out in clothes that I didn't like, and have to limit myself to wearing. It sounds simple, but comfort is a game-changer. Once I focus less on constantly adjusting my clothes mid-workout, my body relaxes.

I experienced a lot of changes, but the biggest and most surprising change for me was mental. It was feeling confident in modest workout clothes! Once I decided not to wear workout clothes and instead wear clothes that weren't workout clothes and made a “statement,” my head was clear. Thoughts weren't clouded. I was able to push my workouts to the side as an obligation and do what I wanted. I had the energy that I was wasting on self-critiquing to put towards feeling good.

This enabled me to focus on many more things I was doing daily. I was able to do a lot more of the things I wanted without feeling obligated to do them. I'd shift my focus to things that required more of my focus. 

This is the connection of modesty and empowerment in fitness. When your clothes meet your comfort level and your values, your confidence is not fragile. When I was in the gym, modest gym clothes changed my mindset from negative to positive. This type of mental shift follows you throughout your day. The mental shift continues to motivate and push you to do what you want.

When considering modest activewear, it helps to have a plan for the selection.

Focus on fit:

  • Being modest does not mean being baggy.
  • Fit pieces that move with your body.

Prioritize fabric:

  • If you want breathability, stretch, and no see-through, you have to pick the right fabric.

Build outfits you trust:

  • The less you think about your clothes, the better.
  • Reliability gives confidence.
